"Near me" is the only search term that matters for local business.

Most local-SEO advice is written for national brands. Here's what actually moves the needle for a single-shingle business in a small town.

If you sell a service to people who live within 30 miles of you, the only search behavior you should care about is somebody typing " near me" into Google or asking ChatGPT the same question.

Everything else.. keyword density, backlinks from random directories, blog posts about industry trends.. matters way less than three boring things almost nobody does well.

The three things that actually move the needle

1. Google Business Profile is 80% of the job.

Your free GBP listing is what Google uses to decide whether to show you in the local pack. Categories accurate? Hours updated? Photos recent? Are you replying to reviews? Are you posting weekly updates? If you can say yes to all of those, you're ahead of about 90% of small businesses in your area.

2. Service pages with the exact words a customer types.

If somebody searches "emergency plumber Habersham county," you need a page on your site whose title and headings contain those exact words. Not your homepage. A dedicated page. Most small-business sites have one page that tries to rank for everything, and ranks for nothing.

3. Citations that match your name, address, phone.. exactly.

If your Yelp page says "123 Main St" and your GBP says "123 Main Street," Google quietly downgrades your trust. Get them aligned. We do this for every client at the Growth tier and above.

What about GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization.. getting cited in AI search results.. is the newer cousin of SEO and is becoming meaningful fast. The good news: most of what you do for traditional SEO also helps GEO. The new piece is structured content that answers questions directly, so the AI can summarize you accurately. If "near me" searches in your area are taking you to your competition instead of you, that's a fixable problem. It's also a problem that takes 60-90 days to fix properly. Anybody who promises faster is selling you something.
