People are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity who to call for plumbing, landscaping, accounting, and every other local service. The businesses showing up in those answers didn't get there by accident.
Here's what AI search is actually doing, and what moves the needle.
How AI search works
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews.. they all crawl the same web as traditional search engines. They read websites, Google Business Profiles, review sites, and directories. Then they synthesize everything into a confident-sounding answer. They favor businesses that have: consistent, crawlable presence; content that directly answers questions; and external validation from reviews, citations, and mentions.
None of those are things AI companies decided to favor. They inherited the same trust signals as traditional SEO.. and then added one new layer: content that's already been written as an answer, not as marketing.
Three things that actually move the needle
1. Your Google Business Profile is a primary source.
AI assistants pull heavily from GBP. Accurate category, a description that explains what you do and for whom, recent photos, weekly posts, and replied-to reviews.. that combination puts you ahead of most businesses in your area. GBP is the one place where offline reputation and digital findability converge.
2. Content that answers questions directly.
AI engines summarize. They need something to summarize. A website that says "we provide excellent service" in three paragraph variations gives them nothing to cite. A page that says "Foundation starts at $85 per month, no long-term contract, launches in about a month" gives them five citable facts.
Write for citation. Lead with the answer, not the setup. The question a prospect would type into ChatGPT.. put the answer in the first two sentences of the relevant page.
3. Citations that repeat your name, address, and phone exactly.
When multiple independent sources say the same name, phone number, and address, AI systems gain confidence that your business is real and trustworthy. Inconsistent NAP (name, address, phone) across listings creates doubt. Getting 10-20 directories aligned is a quiet trust signal that compounds over months.
The one thing most businesses skip
Most owners focus entirely on their own website and ignore the external signal layer. ChatGPT didn't learn your business from your homepage alone.. it learned it from a web of references that point at your homepage. Yelp, BBB, industry directories, review mentions: the more credible external references exist, the more confident the AI becomes that you're a real, trustworthy answer.
